    Deep work in 90-minute blocks

The timer above runs 90-minute focus blocks with a 20-minute break, and a 30-minute break after every second block. Choose one demanding task, add it to the list, then press Start.

    Why 90 minutes

Many deep-work routines use blocks of roughly 90 minutes: long enough to get past the warm-up and do serious writing, research or problem solving, but short enough to stop before quality drops.

The number is often linked to the sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman, who proposed a basic rest-activity cycle of about 90 minutes. The evidence for a strict daytime cycle is mixed, so treat 90 minutes as a practical upper limit for one block, not a biological rule.

How many 90-minute blocks in a day

Two to four is plenty. Studies of expert performers, such as K. Anders Ericsson's research on musicians, found that even the best rarely sustained more than about four hours of deliberate practice a day. Use the rest of the day for meetings, email and lighter work.

    Setting up a 90-minute block

    • Decide the single outcome before you start, such as "first draft of section 2".
    • Turn off notifications and close chat apps for the whole block.
    • Keep water and everything you need within reach so you do not get up.
    • Turn on browser notifications in Settings so the end of the block reaches you in any tab.

When 90 minutes is too long

Long focus is a skill you build. If you drift after 40 minutes, work up to it with the 50/10 timer or the 52/17 timer first, and add ten minutes a week.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 90 minutes of focus too long?

For most people it is the upper end of what one block can hold. It works well for demanding tasks once you are used to long focus; if you are not there yet, start with 50 minutes.

How long should a break be after 90 minutes of work?

Between 15 and 30 minutes. This timer uses 20 minutes after each block and 30 minutes after every second block. Change either in Settings.

Will the timer keep time in a background tab?

Yes. The countdown is based on the clock rather than on counting ticks, it shows in the tab title, and the alarm plays when the block ends.
